Last DIY Project for 2012

Finished my last DIY project just in time, just a day before 2013 which is also my cousin’s birthday! It’s a wooden jewelry box for my cousin’s birthday. I’m quite satisfied with the result, so I would like to blog about it. Here’s a short tutorial!

These are the things you need
1. Enamel paint to paint the box. I’m using white because I like white, and I THINK my cousin likes white too. Hahaha!! I got this from Mr DIY for RM18.

2. A wooden box. I got this untreated ready-made wooden box from Art.Friend in Gardens for RM13.50. I think this is quite expensive laa but I have no idea where else I can get a box like this.

3. A piece of sand paper. There are many types of sand paper, I bought the rough type cuz the surface of the box is quite rough. I got this from Mr DIY too, for RM0.50

4. A pair of glove. You can skip this if you don’t mind getting your hands dirty. Lol. I got this from Mr DIY for RM0.80

5. Brushes. Both are from Mr DIY too, big brush RM0.80 and small brush is RM1.20. I wonder why the smaller one is more expensive than the big one and yes, I got most of the equipments from Mr DIY because things are cheap there.

Let’s start!

Mark your work station with newspaper.
This is my territory!! Hahaha! Cover work station with newspaper because it’s gonna get messy and dirty, well unless you don’t mind the paint dropping everywhere la. :P

Sand the box.

1. Apply a thin layer of paint on the surface
2. Dry it
3. Sand it again
4. Paint it
5. Dry it
6. Repeat step 4 and 5 until you are satisfied with your work.

Done painting! Wheee!
Now is the decoration part, my favourite part!!
It’s time to be creative! I’m gonna glitter the letters (my cousin’s name) and hang them inside the box. Then I will put felt fabric and foam paper inside like this:

80% done!
To make glitter letters, you will need:
A bottle of clear nail polish
Glitters (I’m using gold because it matches white and red)
A4 paper

1. Cut out the letters from A4 paper
2. Paint it with clear nail polish
3. Pour/ sprinkle glitters over the letter
4. Let it dry
5. Apply another layer of clear nail polish as coating
6. Dry it.
7. Repeat step 5 and 6 until you’re certain that the glitters won’t drop.

Same steps applied to Glitter Love but instead of using A4 paper, I use foam paper.

Now, hang the letters and stick the love on the surface… and we are done!

Pretty?

I hope my cousin likes it laaa. I’ve been cracking my head thinking of what I should get for her since early November, so one day I went to Art.Friend and the moment I saw this wooden box, I knew what I will do to it. My right brain just can’t stop being creative. Hahaha! (P.Yan, you know what I mean) There are a lot more ideas pop-up but due to time constraint I had to forgo them.

So there you go, a short tutorial on painting and decorating a jewelry box. Have fun and be creative yo!
